We dropped the ball but we haven't let the country down - Police Commissioner

National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole admits that while police have dropped the ball with the latest crime statistics, there are some areas of improvement and work is being done to curb criminal activity in the country.

The police ministry has recorded more than 20 000 murders between April last year and this year with the murder rate up by nearly 7%.

Sexual offences and attempted murder are also up. There are marginally fewer house robberies but cash-in-transit heists have risen by over 50%.

Speaking to Joanne Joseph on the Afternoon Drive, Sitole insists that general crime has gone down.

Yes we have dropped the ball but we did not necessarily let the country down. In general crime has gone down, where we did not do well are the crimes that matter most to the public, which are the crimes of fear.

He mentions some of the areas that need to be improved within the SAPS.

When I came in, I introduced a turnaround strategy. Firstly, it was the turn around of the crime intelligence,it has started responding but we still need to do more work in order to take it forward. Secondly, the beefing up of the police stations, there is a migration of resources that were moving. We also have the population ratio of the police to the public that we intend to correct.

Khehla Sitole, National Police Commissioner

Yes on the other hand police response and resistance, we need to increase. We are introducing tactical response training now. We identifying all the hot spots.
