Bheki Cele: A lot of rebuilding is needed to deal with crime

The ministry of Police released South Africa's crimes statistics on Tuesday in Parliament in which Minister Bheki Cele said South Africans are living in a war zone.

Minister Cele told Parliament that there are 57 South Africans killed each and every day. He further stated that over 20 000 deaths were recorded in the past financial year.

Speaking to Eusebius McKaiser, Minister Cele says he does not have enough information to say which other departments have dropped the ball in dealing with crime.

Manager at Crime and Justice Information Hub at the Institute for Security Studies Lizette Lancaster says the releasing of crime stats should include the Department of Education and Social Development.

We have called for the crime stats to be released not only by the police but by the entire security cluster.
