Klebsiella pneumonia outbreak at Thelle Mogoerane contained - acting CEO
The Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Vosloorus says while it is not out of the woods, it has managed to contain a Klebsiella pneumonia outbreak at the facility.
In July, there were reports of five babies who died and seven others infected by the bacteria. Another infant passed away on Tuesday.
The Gauteng Health Department decided to put the hospital’s CEO‚ Nomonde Mqhayi-Mbambo‚ on special leave, after she allegedly ignored staff warnings that overcrowding in the neonatal ward had increased the risk of infection.
Dr Jatin Ganda, CEO of Carletonville Hospital has since been tasked to oversee operations for the time being.
He joined Joanne Joseph on the Afternoon Drive for an update.
We have managed to contain the outbreak, we are not out of the woods yet but in the last week we have managed to get controlled and the control has been primarily through segregation and monitoring those that were affected by the bacteria.Dr Jatin Ganda, CEO of Carletonville Hospital
At the moment there were a total of 12 babies found to be positive for a certain strain of Klebsiella, of which it is six that have passed away.Dr Jatin Ganda, CEO of Carletonville Hospital
