Ocean Basket introducing compostable cornstarch straws

Seafood restaurant chain Ocean Basket banned plastic straws eight-month ago. Now they want to introduce compostable cornstarch straws.

Group Marketing Executive at Ocean Basket, Jean Sloane says they have been working on an alternative offering to plastic straws for over a year.

She says the new straws are not harmful to the environment as they are made of cornstarch and are compostable.

As much as we want people not to use straws, it is not a great consumer experience when drinking a milkshake without a straw.

Jean Sloane, Group Marketing Executive at Ocean Basket

Sloane says because of import challenges they will be offering paper straws for now until they get a local company that can produce straws made out of cornstarch.
