100 year old gogo boards her first flight to mark Mandela's centenary birthday

South African airline kulula.com has gifted the magic of flying to a 100-year-old passenger after her grandchild Zethu Msindo called into the Afternoon Drive Show with Joanne Joseph to share her story.

Marking Nelson Mandela’s centenary birthday in July this year, Kulula overheard the conversation about Emily Sakulwa, born in March 1918 and her wish to fly.

The airline stepped up to the podium and decided to give Sakulwa her #wingstofly.

From the the township of Dimbaza in the Eastern Cape, kulula partnered with Europecar to provide Sakulwa with the best flying experience ever. Together with the necessary airport arrangements, Sakulwa flew to Cape Town international Airport to visit her children on Wednesday.

Speaking about her first flying experience Sakulwa told the airline it was everything she had always dreamed of and a special moment.

Today I feel like a true celebrity, enkosi kakhulu[thank you so much]

Emily Sakulwa

Luane Lavery, Brand Communications Manager for kulula.com explains the motivation behind the initiative.

It has always been our mission since launching to give all South African’s the #wingstofly. We knew instantly when overhearing the conversation about Emily, not having flown before at the age of 100, that we wanted to get involved and make the magic of flying possible for her. As South Africa’s first low-cost airline we still want to make flying as affordable and accessible to all South African’s.
