[LISTEN] Home Affairs never verified Ajay Gupta’s family investment claims

The Home Affairs Portfolio Committee has heard how the Home Affairs Department did not verify claims of investments and job creation made on behalf of Ajay Gupta’s family in support of their application to become South African citizens.

Parliament’s inquiry into the naturalisation of members of the family continued on Thursday.

The committee heard that representations were made on the family's behalf by associate, Ashu Chawla, one of the suspects being prosecuted for fraud in the Estina dairy farm matter.

Eyewitness News reporter Lindsay Dentlinger has more on the story.

They have admitted as much, saying they do not really go that far in the course of their duties and that they were satisfied that attached to that letter, which outline the amount of jobs that the families companies were going to create - attached to that were documents from the revenue service, so they aware quite satisfied.....

They saying officials did their job by rejecting the initial application by Ajay Gupta's family members, it was only when an intermediate - Ashu Chawla wrote a letter to the department to reconsider....
