'Zuma is a master at obfuscation'

Former president Jacob Zuma says he will apply his mind to a request from the chairperson of the state capture inquiry Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, to provide an affidavit responding to the allegations against him.

Zuma's response comes a day after the former president referred to state capture as a 'politically decorated expression'.

Addressing students at the Walter Sisulu University of Technology in Mthatha on Wednesday, Zuma said the state was composed of three elements - the legislature‚ the judiciary and the executive - and that none of them were captured.

Professor Mark Swilling co-author of the Shadow State: The politics of state capture and SACP Spokesperson Alex Mashilo joined Karima on her show for reaction.

I think in like before, in his political speeches, he is a master at obfuscation so in order to discredit the commission , he creates the notion that the state can't be captured because it is made up of three branches.. it is just a ridiculous, illogical, politically crazy way of understanding what the state is.

Mashile says Zuma's statements were an expression of frustration.

Yesterday, when he was addressing students, he repeated an argument that professor partly responded to, which he had made at one meeting of the ANC provincial general council, that the state is made up of three organs....the South African state has got many state institutions which are not part of parliament, the executive and the judiciary...so he talks about the state as is.

Alex Mashilo, SACP Spokesperson

Former president Jacob Zuma was our president, he has a clear grasp of the intuitions that make up our state. He was repeating an argument that he has made on which he has not been engaged.
