Parktown Boys former assistant water polo coach found guilty of sexual assault

Parktown Boys' former assistant water polo coach Collan Rex, has been found guilty of 144 counts of sexual assault and 12 counts of common assault in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court.

He’s been acquitted of other charges including attempted murder, rape, sexual grooming and exposing minors to pornography.

Eyewitness News reporter, Thando Kubheka has more on the story.

Acting Judge Peet Johnson he tested the evidence of all the witnesses that gave testimony here and in his judgement he said that some witnesses evidence were highly improbable, contradictory - some witnesses were doubtful and were not sure how many times they were abused.He went on to say that some of the evidence was a fabrication.

He said that he found Rex to be an open and credible witness who accepted responsibility for his actions by admitting to the 144 counts of sexual abuse, he believes Rex would not lie about the other crimes against him if he had already come clean about the 144...

Meanwhile, children's rights activist and manager at Big Shoes Foundation Luke Lamprecht says he is happy with the ruling.

What I am really interested in is what the sanction is going to be for this. The sentence on Monday, for me, will tell us how seriously these sexual assault cases are being taken by the court.
