WC DA leader refuses to hand over electronic devices as party probes media leak

The DA has apparently asked at least three party leaders to hand over their cell phones, laptops and other electronic devices to find a suspected mole.

The DA is investigating how Mmusi Maimane's intention to stand as Western Cape premier candidate was leaked to the media.

The DA’s federal legal commission chair, Glynnis Breytenbach, is leading the investigation.

Western Cape DA leader Bonginkosi Madikizela confirmed that he was asked to hand over his devices but he says that he refused.

Madikizela says the DA needs to find alternative approaches to deal with the internal leak.

He claims that the DA's move to confiscate electronic devices is a violation of privacy.

Meanwhile, the DA's national spokesperson Solly Malatsi would not be drawn on the nature of the investigation.

No, I haven't [handed in the decives]. I won't.

Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape DA leader

I share the concerns that my colleagues have about people who are leaking information to the media.

Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape DA leader

But I believe we must find better ways of dealing with this issue.

Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape DA leader

The kind of reaction from the leak, which required some of us to hand over our devices, I don't think that is helping.

Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape DA leader

While I fully support that the leaks must be investigated, we must not do these things in such a way that they violate the privacy of individuals.

Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape DA leader

I don't have to prove to anyone that I'm not leaking [information].

Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape DA leader

I will participate in any investigation but I will certainly not be handing over my device.

Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape DA leader

It would highly inappropriate for me to get into the details.

Solly Malatsi, DA national spokesperson

The DA's Federal Executive thought the investigation to be conducted because it has been consistently concerned about leaking of information from confidential meetings of the party.
