Dros rape: 'He was sitting near the kid's play area...he had his eye on her'

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says a man accused of raping a 6-year old girl in a restaurant in Pretoria will remain in jail.

The man allegedly attacked the six-year-old inside a toilet cubicle at a Dros franchise on Saturday.

NPA's Phindi Mjonondwane says the 20-year-old has been provisionally charged with rape, possession of drugs, assault with intent to do bodily harm and intimidation.

I am saying provisionally because the investigations are still ongoing so the state will determine at a later stage exactly which charges should be referred against the accused person.

Phindi Mjonondwane, NPA spokesperson

The matter was postponed to 2 October for further investigation and the accused is still in custody.

Phindi Mjonondwane, NPA spokesperson

We're not yet informed as the NPA if he has any intention of bringing a bail application. We view rape of minors as a very serious offence so as the NPA where we have grounds to argue against bail we will do that.

An eyewitness says the suspect was beaten up in a mob justice attack shortly after the incident.

Describing events on the evening, Richard claims the man followed the girl to the bathroom.

I was sitting outside and all of a sudden there was a commotion in the restaurant towards the toilet area.

Richard, eyewitness

I have seen this guy in the restaurant before, even the waitresses know this guy. When he got there, he was sitting near the kids play area, while he was having a glass of water, he had his eye on the area, looking at her and waited for her to go to the toilet and followed her.
