9 infants die at Rahima Moosa Hospital after bacterial outbreak

The Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital say that nine babies died at its facility following a necrotising enterocolitis bacterial outbreak this year.

The disease mostly affects the intestine of a premature infant, which then leads to local infection.

The hospital says its attended to 43 cases between March and July of which nine were fatal.

DA Gauteng Health Spokesperson Dr Neil Campbell says the number is of concern to the DA.

We do know that the hospitals are particularly overcrowded and we do know that after stringent cross infection, methodologies were adopted in the hospital and these infections have decreased again.
