'Increased taxes among the longer-term effects of Moyane’s dismantling of Sars'

The best skills and expertise started to leave the institution… They increased tax rates… These are the longer-term effects of the dismantling of a well-run and respected institution…

Adrian Lackay, former Sars spokesperson

The SA Revenue Service (Sars) has dropped its case against its former spokesperson Adrian Lackay for speaking in parliament about problems at the organisation.

Suspended Sars Commissioner Tom Moyane in May 2015 claimed R12 million in damages from Lackay.

Lackay testified at the Nugent Inquiry into Sars that Moyane made his life “intolerable” and that the disgraced former Commissioner ran a "disinformation campaign", falsely claiming there’s a “rogue unit” at Sars.

Moyane’s destabilisation of Sars, testified Lackay, led to shortfalls in the collection of revenue and the severe risks the fiscus currently faces.

Ray White (in for Bruce Whitfield on The Money Show) interviewed Lackay.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

It is quite a huge relief…

Adrian Lackay, former Sars spokesperson

The rogue unit story was the basis on which Moyane rid Sars of its expertise…

Adrian Lackay, former Sars spokesperson

We need to rebuild not only Sars… there are so many SOEs where absolute plundering took place…

Adrian Lackay, former Sars spokesperson

I think the Nugent Commission is doing excellent work…
