Unlike most 16-year-olds, pianist and jazz artist Curtley Cerfontein spends his most of his spare time playing jazz.
The talented teen was one of the first members of the Cape Town-based music initiative for young people, Jazz Yard Academy Band in Bonteheuwel.
Having started playing the drums, Cerfontein found his passion in the piano when he joined the academy four years ago.
This year, he performed with the academy at the World Children’s Prize ceremony in Sweden.
He joined Joanne Joseph on the Afternoon Drive to share more about his love for jazz.
Jazz is a different type of music for me because the things that come out of jazz music, it brings such joy to one's heart. It is unexplainable really. It calms you down in many ways.— Curtley Cerfontein, pianist
Performing at the World Children’s Prize ceremony in Sweden was a whole other experience. I wouldn't have seen myself there.— Curtley Cerfontein, pianist
He says he wants to give back to his community and help create job opportunities for promising artists.
