A recommendation to rename one of the busiest roads in Johannesburg, William Nicol Drive, has been made to the City of Johannesburg.
The busy road could be named after struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
Well, not everyone is pleased with the recommendation.
Callers on the Eusebius McKaiser Show had different views on the proposed name changes.
Lorraine went head-to-head with Eusebius on why the name change is a waste of money.
Who is starting this renaming of the roads? Is it government or the municipalities or who because nobody has given any thought to the fact that it's going to impact on so many people. Now, what are we going to call Nicol Way? The Winnie shopping centre?— Lorraine, Caller
You can still call it Nicol Way.— Eusebius McKasier, Show host
How? It's not on Nicol anymore. It's identified by the fact that it's on Nicol Drive.— Lorraine, Caller
You can call it Nicol Way, the world is not going to come to an end.— Eusebius McKasier, Show host
Now, businesses on Wiliam Nicol Drive have to change their business cards, letterheads and everything because they are not on William Nicol anymore - you are Winnie Madikizela. What is that going to do to the cost? It is not just the cost of renaming roads because for me personally, I think its wrong because I think that money can be used somewhere than renaming the road. Why do we need to rename the roads? What is their rationale or renaming roads? Why don't we do a statue to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela? Why must we change a road name that is going to cost a lot to a lot of people? Why don't we build a little shopping centre?— Lorraine, Caller
Well, other callers did not agree with Lorraine and say they don't even know who William Nicol is or what he has done for the country.
I could not find any genuine concern about money and businesses. Businesses change their letterheads, logos, directors all the time. So what is the cost to my dignity that is a cost to a letterhead? Who is William Nicol? Why must I as a black South African woman who is made invisible in all public spaces have to feel that the standard is William Nicol? Some of the word used by the callers were very interesting.— Lebo, Caller
The name change will create more jobs.— Chris, Caller

Only if the government was more concerned with building 'New infrastructure done by them' to honour our Hero's, instead of changing names of existing ones, that would be so cool 👌🏾#winniemandela— Haṱa (@Hatio_HT) October 3, 2018
