[LISTEN] Naked Scientist: Where does sea foam come from?

Ever wondered what sea foam is and why there is so much of it at some beaches?

Naked Scientist, Chris Smith, gives you this answer and more...

Smith explains that the foam is caused by proteins and other substances which reduce the surface tension of water and have a detergent like effect.

There are proteins made by plants, other small molecules which are made by the animals that live in the sea and they have the effect of getting in between water molecules and reducing the bonding - the hydrogen attractions between the molecules and if you weaken that attraction, the water can form a thin film like a bubble.

You get this foam, especially on a windy day.
