[LISTEN] Mandela use to joke and call me his favourite judge - Prof Mervyn King

In the profile interview, #WeekendBreakfast host Phemelo Motene chats to Senior Counsel and Former Judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa, Professor Mervyn King about his relationship with Nelson Mandela.

King says that the hardships of Apartheid were primarily in the rural areas, but journalists from overseas would come to see what was happening in the Urban areas.

He adds that a majority of South Africans hadn't been immersed in the economy because of the unequal opportunity, and consequences of the Apartheid Legislation.

I had a very successful corporate legal practice, I became a judge and resigned. Once a judge, always a judge and I became Directors of companies.

King says that he has experience on both sides of the corporate coin.

I was asked to head a commission, and write guidelines for the majority of my fellow citizens he says.

At that time, I was the Chairperson of a few companies adds King.

King recalls a conversation he had with Nelson Mandela about a pressing matter relating to schools.

While I had Mr Mandela on the phone, I told him that I'd been approached to head the commission he says.

He (Nelson Mandela) said do it, you're the right man but make sure they put their hands on their hearts.
