Stunt or statement? R20m Banksy artwork self destructs at auction

Going...going....gone!

Anonymous British artist Banksy has revealed how he built a shredder into one of his best-known works.

The Girl With Balloon sold for over R20 million at an auction in London but then self-destructed the minute the hammer went down.

Banksy later posted a video on Instagram explaining that a few years ago he installed a shredder into the frame of the painting.

But, was the auction house in on the stunt?

Azania Mosaka spoke to senior Art Specialist at Strauss & Co, Dr Alastair Meredith about the 'incident'.

That's the elephant in the room, the idea that was the auction house in or it or not? The reality is that the work would have to have been examined outside of the frame in order the check the authenticity and the condition.

And what of the value of the piece now it's been 'destroyed'?

I expect it would be [worth] much more now than it was on Friday.
