[LISTEN] South African victim of Catholic sex scandal opens up about his abuse

The global scandal around sex abuse in the Catholic church has reached South Africa’s shores, with the first accusation being publicly made at a media briefing on Tuesday morning.

William Segodisho, now a middle-aged man, says he suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a Catholic priest who took William under his wing when he was a teenager.

William had fled political violence in Limpopo as a teenager in 1985. But, he ended up living on the streets of Johannesburg, until a shelter, called Streetwise, and a priest he calls Father Bill rescued him.

But he says it came at a terrible cost.

At the media conference, William Segodisho became the first South African to officially accuse the Catholic Church of sexual abuse.

He spoke to Afternoon’ Drive’s Joanne Joseph about the events, he says, have destroyed his life.

William explained how he first came into contact with Father Bill.

William told Joanne Joseph of his disappointment as a teenager, that the adults around him, seemed blind to his situation.

The country is digesting William Segodisho’s allegations of sexual abuse at the hands of a Catholic priest, aired at a media conference. In remembering what happened during his teenage years, William told Joanne Joseph he had no one to turn to.

William Segodisho, who alleges sex abuse by a Catholic priest, spoke about his efforts to get the church to listen to him. He says their response lacked compassion.
