Is it really true that women love a bad boy?
While there is very little academic research on the psychology behind women who fall in love with convicts, forensic psychologist Bronwyn Stollarz joined Azania to explore some of the possible explanations.
Stolerz says one should avoid generalizing and that each individual has their own background history that may contribute to why they are attracted to a particular person.
However, she says a very small majority of women might qualify for a diagnosis of what is called Hybristophilia - a paraphilic behaviour.
It is something that we talk about as an abnormal sexual interest and these women are sexually aroused at the thought of having sexual contact with or a relationship with a man who has committed a sexually violent offence, but that is not something that we see occurring frequently...— Bronwyn Stollarz, forensic psychologist
A woman [might] want to take on a maternal role - to nurture, to change, to rehabilitate the accused in some way. To save him. They believe he is innocent, even if he has plead guilty they believe he was wronged or is a victim in some way.— Bronwyn Stollarz, forensic psychologist
Although we want to try and understand why women might get into relationships like this, we have to keep in mind that we are dealing with humans and human behavior and the possible explanations for this are hugely varied.— Bronwyn Stollarz, forensic psychologist
