Indonesia officially calls off search in quake-tsunami rescue mission

Search and rescue operations in Indonesia's quake-tsunami disaster have been called off.

More than 2,000 bodies have been recovered since the disaster on Sulawesi island.

All foreign aid organisations that have come into the country to assist have been asked to leave.

Eyewitness News reporter Ziyanda Ngcobo who is in Indonesia with the Gift of the Givers organisation, describes some of the difficulties they have faced during operations over the last week.

Because of the restrictions that were placed by the Indonesian government, the Gift of the Givers have pushed through despite some moments of despondency. They installed tents for families, handed out food parcels, 300 families benefited from that. The medical team was able to see at least 25 patients.

Of course there is still a sense that they could have done more had there not been all these restrictions.
