Judge Bernard Ngoepe confident Sars ombud is helping tax payers
Five years ago, if you had any dispute against Sars, you really had only two options, you could either complain to Sars about Sars or you could find yourself a very expensive lawyer.
The Office of the Tax Ombud was established to help South African taxpayers resolve their issues with the revenue collector.
In the year 2013/2014 they dealt with 670 complaints and in the last year under review, they dealt with 17 000, but we also know that legislation requires them to get a nod from the commissioner when they employ people, so whose side are they really on?
Speaking to Bongani Bingwa, Tax Ombudsman, Judge Bernard Ngoepe, says they have come a long way as the Ombud as he started off with a staff of two to three members.
Now the total complement is over 30, so we have grown and we have taken some strides.Judge Bernard Ngoepe, Tax Ombudsman
He adds that he believes that they have been useful in helping taxpayers resolve their issues with Sars.
