Bheki Cele anti-gang unit fully operational in the Cape Flats

Major General Jeremy Vearey has confirmed that the specialised gang unit that Police Minister Bheki Cele spoke about a few weeks ago to be deployed in the Cape Flats and is already operational.

He says the unit's first response was in Lavender Hill where there was a gang shooting and the unit responded in an improved amount of time.

It is operational as from Tuesday and it is responding much better than before.

Vearey explained how the unit was formed and how it works.

It has a multidisciplinary and multi-operational stream, streams of policing under one command and that command is that of Major General Andre Lincoln.

It includes an intelligent input that involves resources that seek to identify threats correctly and accurately.

It has a dedicated investigative capacity that focuses on murder and attempted murders as well as Prevention of organised crimes (Poca).
