Pik Botha was a visionary, seeing things way ahead of everybody - Adriaan Vlok

Adriaan Vlok, who served in the cabinet alongside Pik Botha responded to the news of his passing this morning.

Botha, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs during Apartheid and Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs under President Nelson Mandela, passed away at the age of 86.

Vlok paid tribute to Botha saying that he was a visionary and he enjoyed working alongside him and eventually becoming friends.

I am very glad that I had an opportunity of becoming friends with him, to work with him and to listen to him. He had a difficult task at the time because he was the foreign minister and we caused problems for him.

We were doing bad things in South Africa and he had to explain what was going on to the world as best as he could, but above all, he was a good colleague and I really appreciate what he has done for South Africa.

One of the things that Botha became renowned for was his way with words. He was the minister who made predictions that "one day South Africa will have a Black president".

Vlok says this is the reason Botha was a visionary and he was seeing things in the future, ahead of everybody else.

Satirist Pieter Dirk-Uys shares some memories of their past encounters with Pik Botha.

He says Botha's comments about South Africa having a Black president did not sit well with a lot of people and certainly something to think about.

I mean the man was an actor. Before he went into politics he was a member of a theatre. There was a crazy twinkle in that man's eye during the apartheid era.
