[LISTEN] Father William MacCurtain apologies to abuse victim William Segodisho

Assistant to the Provincial Jesuits church in Britain Father Paul Nicholson SJ says the apology written by Father William MacCurtain is legit.

William Segodisho, now a middle-aged man, says he suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a Catholic priest, known as Father Bill, who took William under his wing when he was a teenager.

In the apology, MacCurtain says "I recognise that my behaviour towards Mr Segudisho in the 1980s violated the trust he had put in me as a Catholic apriest. I deeply regret the pain that I have caused Mr Segodisho, and would wish to apologise to him unreservedly. I realise, though, that such an apology cannot right the wrongs done to him at that time , or the suffering that he has endured since."

Ever since we learnt of this in 2002, we have never disputed Mr Segodisho's case. We recognise that the abuse took place as he has told us.

In 2002 we first learn of this, we carried out an investigation. At that time he was clear he didn't want this matter reported to the police.
