At the moment it is stable… we’re confident we can deliver… yes, there are challenges…

Mark Kingon, Sars

The South African Revenue Services (Sars) denied on Wednesday that its eFiling system is about to collapse.

Testimony by Sars execs at the Sars Inquiry has caused many South African taxpayers to panic.

Sars claims the eFiling system is handling, on average, 25 000 tax returns per day, with an “uptime” or availability for 99.7% of the time.

The deadline for submissions via eFiling is 31 October.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Mark Kingon, Acting Commissioner at Sars.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

No. [When asked if there was sufficient investment in previous years.]

Mark Kingon, Sars

We have to refresh [eFiling]… also the display, it is outdated…

Mark Kingon, Sars

I can’t spend money I don’t have… we’re engaging with Treasury…

Mark Kingon, Sars

I have a layer of management in IT that is superb…

Mark Kingon, Sars

We believe it [The Nugent Commission] is going to transform our organisation…
