'They must release you, we want you outside' Minister Mokonyane tells Omotoso

Proceedings at the rape trial of Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso and two co-accused started on Monday with the defence, informing the court that two of the accused out on bail were reluctant to pitch up, though later did so.

Defence counsel Peter Daubermann has also asked Judge Mandela Makaula to recuse himself, which the judge dismissed saying the application has no merit, the case was later postponed to 25 October.

However, it was this video that has people question what is meant by what was said?

Minister Nomvula Mokonyane can be heard telling Omotoso that he must be released as he is wanted outside.

The video comes after calls by the Minister for Women in the Presidency Bathabile Dlamini on everyone to ask themselves what they have done to protect women?

But what has the ANC Women's League done to protect women?

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa to address the video and Dlamini's call, National Convenor of the ANC Women’s League Young Women’s Desk Precious Banda says the question comes from the fact that society has looked at gender issues as being the responsibility of women.

It is the responsibility of women to ensure that they are safe. It is the responsibility of women to make sure that they look out for their own oppression.

So the question was asked, just to remind everyone that the fight against gender-based violence is a fight for the whole society, and should be put in the forefront by everyone and not women alone.

When asked about the Women's League's support for Jacob Zuma when he was accused of rape, Banda said she was not in the league at the time.

I am a young person who was not even active at that time, but I also did my own research to look at what was the attitude of the Women's League during the Kwezi Trial and the Women's League during the trial actually issued statements condemning the alleged rape.

The Women's League said justice must prevail, and the Women's League as an organisation has even spoken against it at that time.

When asked about the video of Nomvula Mokonyane telling Omotoso that he must be released as he is wanted outside, Banda could not be drawn to answer that question but stuck to re-iterating the women's league stance on other cases.

If they say we want you released and so on, that could actually mean something different, it could mean that there is no place for abusers in our society. That statement spoke about the victimisation of women.
