[LISTEN] Comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout chats about his latest movie “Kanarie”

Comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout has stepped into an entirely new role in Christiaan Olwagen’s new film 'Kanarie'.

It's an Afrikaans coming-of-age musical war drama set in South Africa in 1985, and centres on a young gay boy, recruited by the military who auditions for the Canaries - the South African Defence Force’s church choir and concert group.

Schalk joined Joanne Joseph in studio to talk about the film and how it explores issues of hyper-masculinity as well as homophobia during that period.

It not only serves as an inspiration for young gay people who have recently come out the closet, I think it shows people who are struggling with any issue that you are not alone in this struggle to try and fit in and figure out who you are.

There is a scene in the movie where Johan says to his lover, we can go to jail, it was a very real possibility if someone found out.
