The Special Investigating Unit has turned to the courts in an attempt to recover more than R7 billion of taxpayers’ money spent on invalid government contracts.
Earlier in October the SIU stated in its annual report that it had prevented the government from losing R407m in dodgy transactions at the Post Office and departments of public works and correctional services.
Head of Communications at the SIU Nazreen Pandor explains how they will go about recouping the money.
We are the only law enforcement agency that is able to institute civil litigation in our own name. If we find for example that there are contracts that might have been irregularly awarded, what we are able to do is make an application to set that contract aside.— Nazreen Pandor, Head of Communications at the SIU
We need to act quickly to make sure that at least we are able to recoup whatever is left. So we do have to work quite speedilty.— Nazreen Pandor, Head of Communications at the SIU
