The fires in George have claimed several lives and destroyed nearly 50 000 hectares of vegetation in the George/Knysna area.
On Tuesday, Knysna mayor Mark Willemse said that nine people had died - it's reported that a South African National Parks employee is among that number.

We spoke to some residents from the Karatara area that had to be evacuated yesterday morning because the fire was getting closer to their properties. Their main concern, besides the fact that they were cold and didn't have enough time to take their belongings, they were worried that their animals were still up there.— Monique Mortlock, EWN reporter
They are also concerned about their houses because they don't know if their houses would still be standing at the end of this ordeal.— Monique Mortlock, EWN reporter
Mortlock says that residents from Rheenendal were also evacuated and moved to a local hall.
