How your pollen allergy could turn fatal

Do you dread the change of season, knowing it will bring with it itchy eyes, constant sneezing and post-nasal drip?

Research has shown that up to 30% of people suffer from pollen allergies.

As nasal allergy and asthma rates increase around the world, pollen monitoring has become an important part of determining the severity of pollen seasons.

Head of UCT’s Lung Institute Professor Jonny Peters says Cape Town has been particularly bad this year.

Record highs of trees and grass pollen and this has been really making people suffer.

Peters says what most people don't realise is that in extreme cases 'allergic rhinitis' can be fatal.

And what is underestimated about allergic rhinitis is 70% to 80% of asthma sufferers suffer with it and although it causes a lot of mobility, this uncontrolled allergic disease can actually cause mortality.

He adds that addressing this allergic disease is a very important problem and that continued pollen monitoring is important.
