#TotalShutdown: National Gender Summit to call for decriminalisation of sex work

On 1 August this year, women across the country staged a 'total shutdown' in protest at violence against women, children and gender non-conforming people.

Following #TheTotalShutdown, President Cyril Ramaphosa committed to convening a National Gender Summit.

Delegates from civil society organisations, including traditional leaders and faith-based organisations, and government are expected to the summit which begins Friday.

Lesley Ncube is National Spokesperson for #TheTotalShutDown.

We came together as #TotalShutdown with civil society a few weeks ago just to map pre-summit ideas on what we want and we have about five key asks from the government.

Lesley Ncube, National Spokesperson of #TheTotalShutDown

Some of the five key asks consist of an emergency multi-sector gender-based violence council; we demand decriminalisation of sex work and we want a commitment to a national strategic plan towards gender-based violence.
