Cape Town's MayCo member for Transport Brett Herron has resigned as a councillor and member of the DA.

His resignation comes a day after former mayor Patrica De Lille also left the party.

This brings to nine the total number of DA councillors who have resigned from the party this past week, according to EWN.

Herron says he could no longer promise projects to communities while behind the scenes, insiders have been killing the projects off.

He claims the DA’s manifesto is a sham.

Herron says he cannot with any credibility continue to meet with communities and promise government is doing all it can to assist people with housing.

He says he never entered politics to get a position, but rather to do his bit to fight for a better South Africa.

Herron has accused City bowl ward councillor Dave Bryant of deliberately blocking a social housing project in the Salt River area. He says this was the last straw.

I resigned from the DA today because I don't believe that they believe in their own policies or manifesto.

I could no longer go out to communities promising them things that people behind the scenes were working actively to block.

The final straw for me was the affordable housing project in Salt River that was blocked last week.

I didn't get into politics for a position. The reasons given by councillor Dave Bryant are bulls**t.

I've been hearing in the corridors on the sixth floor of the Civic Centre building, which is the political leadership floor, for the last few weeks that Dave Bryant has been lobbying for this project to be stopped.
