'I was chuffed by how Michael Jackson could move people across all cultures'

Gregory Vuyani Maqoma is a South African choreographer. He started his dance training in 1990 at Moving into Dance. From then on he established himself as an internationally renowned dancer, choreographer, director, and scriptwriter for his works.

Maqoma's reality is not like one on a fairy tale story. He grew up in spaces where there was political unrest, where there was battles and he referenced and tries to put this in a beautiful manner through his talent.

My dance is not about the aesthetic beauty of movement, it is about the fundamental realities of people, my own reality where I come from and my own history. By acknowledging my history I also acknowledge the history of many of my ancestors.

Gregory Maqoma - Choreographer

There is so much power in knowing that you have a story to tell, the more you own that power, the more you can affirm your position in society.

Gregory Maqoma - Choreographer

Maqoma told Phemelo on the Weekend Breakfast that he is currently working with Idris Alba on his new play called Tree, which will be a combination of music, dance and film, and will explore the past, present and future of South Africa through the eyes of one man.
