Proposal to use bail system to punish drunk drivers is 'laughable' - law prof

Wits Law Professor James Grant has dismissed a new proposal by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) for harsher punishment against drunk drivers.

The RTMC wants motorists found driving under the influence be locked up for seven days before they can apply for bail.

The RTMC has written to the Justice Department asking for drunk driving to be reclassified in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act.

Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) says it's also opposed to the proposal.
