Wits Law Professor James Grant has dismissed a new proposal by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) for harsher punishment against drunk drivers.
The RTMC wants motorists found driving under the influence be locked up for seven days before they can apply for bail.
The RTMC has written to the Justice Department asking for drunk driving to be reclassified in terms of the Criminal Procedure Act.
Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) says it's also opposed to the proposal.
It's frankly laughable.— James Gant, Wits law professor
It confuses the law and is out of touch.— James Gant, Wits law professor
It's not about the extent of punishment but about the certainty of punishment that operates on people's minds.— James Gant, Wits law professor
