Premier of the Western Cape Helen Zille on Monday visited some of the areas that were ravaged by fire along the Garden Route.
Zille says it was absolutely devastating to see the damage caused by the fire. The fire destroyed over 91 000 hectares, says Zille.
I spoke to the remaining family members of the eight members of the same family that died in the fire. It was the devastating and profound moment of my whole premiership.— Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape
I also went to a resort where all people who were evacuated are. They are all trying to deal with the pain and the crisis that they face in going back and trying to establish themselves.— Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape
Zille commended the mitigation plans that were put in place after last year's Knysna fire. She says if it wasn't for those plans, the fire would've destroyed more than it has at the moment.
People must create a defendable space around where they are. If there are right next to alien vegetation, then they are extremely at risk.— Helen Zille, Premier of the Western Cape
