237 cash-in-transit heist suspects arrested since April

Police Minister Bheki Cele says 237 suspects have been arrested in relation to cash-in-transit heist since April 2018.

Saps national spokesperson, Brigadier Vish Naidoo says the National Civilisation Intervention initiated by the police commissioner and the minister is starting to yield some results with 36% reduction in cash-in-transit heist.

Besides the fact that we reduced the stats by 36%, I think it is important that we also took 237 of the CIT robbers off our streets of which we are hoping to see less of these robberies.

Brigadier Vish Naidoo, SAPS national spokesperson

Naidoo says there are kingpins among the 237 that were arrested and the Crime Intelligent Unit is working tirelessly to bring in those that are still outstanding.

Head of service delivery at SABRIC, Kevin Twiname says although there has been a significant progress in arresting the suspects, the challenge lies in making sure that these individuals are successfully prosecuted.

The police have certainly made a huge impact and probably stabilised the situation.

He says they have raised concerns with the police minister that some of the suspects are arrested, then released on bail, only to be arrested again on similar offences in other provinces.

Twiname says the interventions that the police have put in place in four provinces where these incidents were taking place seem to have yielded good results.

He says the cash-in-transit companies also helped by putting in place measures to prevent these robberies.
