Trump suffers a blow as US Democrats win the house in the mid-term elections, EWN New York correspondent Nadia Neophytou reports.

The latest midterm election results show the opposition Democrats tipped to win the House of Representatives while the Republicans are likely to retain the Senate.

It'll be the first time in eight years that the Democrats have taken the lower chamber of Congress.

EWN New York correspondent Nadia Neophytou spoke to Kieno Kammies about the atmosphere on the ground.

There's a real jovial sense that this is the time the people have been waiting for. For almost two years there's been a culmination of anxiety, sadness and depression

Nadia Neophytou, EWN New York correspondent

To some people, this feels like a chance to take back what they feel was lost with the Presidency of Donald Trump, a divisive time and very controversial which deepened the division between the Democrats and the Republicans.

Nadia Neophytou, EWN New York correspondent

Neophytou says for the Democrats this looks more like a rebirth as they represent a more diverse group of candidates.

Rainbow is the best way to describe it. We also have the first male gay governer that's elected.

Nadia Neophytou, EWN New York correspondent

These results show a shift from the traditional, initial makeup of the Democratic party and it is definitely needed.
