[LISTEN] Unions to protest against retrenchments at SABC

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has called on its workers to support a picket against retrenchments at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

981 permanent staff and over 1,000 freelancers are expected to be let go as the cash-strapped public broadcaster tries to restructure and claw itself back from financial disaster.

COSATU will join members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) in the shutdown on Friday.

The trade union federation’s Gauteng leadership says its "angry against employers who continue to dismiss workers despite the high levels of unemployment in the country".

The Federation’s Gauteng Provincial Secretary Dumisani Dakile says

They need to look at reducing the salaries of executives who are earning millions of rands and we don't know what for.

We are also calling for a turn around strategy to make sure it saves jobs and makes SABC viable.
