Rhino poacher's 33 year sentence welcomed by documentary maker

The 33-year jail sentence handed down to a convicted poacher has been welcomed by the producer of an award-winning documentary on rhino poaching.

Bonne de Bod's film "Stroop" follows the prosecutor who is involved in the case of Patrick Nkuna.

Nkuna was arrested in 2015 in the Kruger National Park and sentenced last week following charges of attempted murder, trespassing in a national park and possession of a firearm.

In my opinion, this sends out a strong message which is what we need.

Bonne de Bod, producer and presenter of Stroop

De Bod explains the dangers facing rangers in their fight against poachers.

I think the situation on the ground is really tough for our rangers ... there is literally no regard for the lives of the rangers, they put their lives on the line on a daily basis.

Bonne de Bod, producer and presenter of Stroop

The poachers have become very arrogant in how they deal with this poaching war and this is worrying.

Bonne de Bod, producer and presenter of Stroop

I want to emphasise that we are dealing with very sophisticated criminal networks
