[LISTEN] DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach withdraws her candidacy for NDPP post

Democratic Alliance (DA) MP, Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach has withdrawn her candidacy for the post of National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).

Breytenbach was one of 12 candidates shortlisted for the position.

The list was compiled by an advisory panel led by Energy Minister Jeff Radebe who was appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to search for suitable names to replace Shaun Abrahams whose appointment was declared invalid and set aside by the Constitutional Court in August.

Breytenbach says she informed the panel of her withdrawal on Tuesday.

i had a long discussion with my party and other individuals. The DA holds the view that the position of the national director should be an apolitical one. Having given the mater some very serious thought, I have decided that in interest of the National Prosecuting Authority, a political appointment of any nature would not be in the best interest of the NPA.

Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach, DA MP

It was an extremely difficult decision to make. It is a dream job for me but it is not about any individual here, it is about the National Prosecuting Authority.
