[LISTEN] Opposition parties raise objections to Land Expropriation Report

The Democratic Alliance (DA) and four other opposition parties have raised their objections to the recommendation that the Constitution be amended to allow for land expropriation without compensation.

The Constitutional Review Committee on Thursday adopted its report on the amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution.

In a media briefing, the DA, Cope, African Christian Democratic Party and the Freedom Front Plus slated the process followed as “fatally flawed”.

They say the amendment is unnecessary.

Eyewitness News Parliamentary Reporter, Gaye Davis was at the briefing.

They say that the expropriation drive is being used by the ANC to cover up the failures of the government to effect meaningful land reform over the past 24 years and that they are using this as an election ploy, to score political points before next year.

They say that exportation without compensation does not address the real constraints that are hobbling with land reform and these are ranging from lack of budget, to departmental inefficiencies to sheer corruption.

They are also saying that the process that is being followed by the Constitutional Review Committee and the final report adopted today, are flawed.
