'NDPP interviews being broadcast live on TV were crucial for transparency'

The advisory panel appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to identify suitable candidates for the position of National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) has now narrowed the list of preferred candidates to five names.

The remaining nominees for the position of NDPP are advocates Shamila Batohi, Siyabulela Mapoma, Simphiwe Mlotshwa, Rodney de Kock and Andrea Johnson.

The President will announce the successful candidate by 19 December from this list.

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa, senior crime and investigative reporter for News24 Mandy Wiener says the process for appointing the new NDPP has been fundamental for transparency.

This is the first time ever we have been actually able to watch the interviews. Remember this was only because of a court application by the Right to Know Campaign, that this was actually made public. They were supposed to be behind closed doors.

Mandy Wiener, Senior Crime and Investigative Reporter for News 24

But for transparency, this is crucial. We had hours of interviews occurring between Wednesday and Friday last week and the public became quite engaged with it. People were watching what was actually being said.

Mandy Wiener, Senior Crime and Investigative Reporter for News 24

She adds that the issues that were raised by the panel were around political interference, pressure, factionalism within the NPA. It felt a lot more like an inquiry into the NPA than necessary interviews she says.
