MyCiTi bus service fires eighty drivers

Kidrogen, a company that operates MyCiTi bus has confirmed the firing of 80 drivers who were part of an unprotected strike that lasted for over a month.

The drivers were demanding better working conditions and to be directly employed by the City of Cape Town.

CEO of MyCiTi Kindrogen, Andile Peter says 'the drivers fired themselves' after they refused to go back to work.

He says the drivers were told to report to their posts failing which they would be dismissed. A few workers returned and went through disciplinary processes and those that did not report for work were fired.

Peter says the strike affected the people of Cape Town and was hard on learners who were writing exams.

When they started to embark on this illegal strike it was at the time of exams. Some of the learners depend on MyCiTi bus for transport and they had to look for alternative transport so it affected them a lot.

It also has a negative impact on workers who depend on MyCiTi bus for transport because they had to make other arrangements to get to work.

He says all the bus routes are fully functional and services are back on track. The company has employed new workers. Some of the drivers who were fired before were called back to work for the company he adds.
