[LISTEN] What are the factors driving emigration?

Emigration specialist Craig Smith says day to day issues like the prospects of exportation of land without compensation and issues around education are some of the factors driving the rising levels of emigration from South Africa.

Recent trends show that affluent families are leaving the country's borders and heading to countries like New Zealand, the UK and Australia.

Smith shares more on the extent of this trend in South Africa.

There is a certain demographic of the type of person that is leaving, generally it is the more wealthier, those who have family links and have an alternative passport.

It has become for many people an issue of those day to day issues we read about everyday, whether it is expropriation without compensation, national health insurance, kids who do not want to go to local universities because they are concerned about protest action and whether they can write their exam, or BEE employment equity...

Craig Smith, Emigration specialist

I think we are getting to a stage where the government realise you have got to tweak these policies and if you don't tweet these fast enough, you are certainly not going to curb those push factors and you are going to lose skilled people which will affect our competitiveness in itself.
