Capetonians, not yet time to relax water saving measures

The rainy season came and left but do Capetonians have enough water to last them until the next rain season?

Dr Peter Johnston, Scientist at UCT's Climate Systems Analysis Group says although we have received good rain this year, it is still not enough.

He says if we have a drier than normal winter we will be back to where we were last year and earlier this year.

We may have enough water to last us till winter comes and if winter rain comes that's all very well.

Dr Peter Johnston, Scientist at UCT's Climate Systems Analysis Group

He says the good thing is that Capetonians have made adjustments to their water consumption but that we need to take care of how we handle our water resources going forward.

This is not the case of oh the drought is over so we can go back to normal.

Dr Peter Johnston, Scientist at UCT's Climate Systems Analysis Group

Johnston says further easing of water restrictions would be a good thing for the City in terms of boosting tourism but emphasises that every citizen needs to play their part even if the City eases the restrictions.

We can't just say we want to go back to normal and start using the amount of water that we've been using when rainfall levels were higher.

Dr Peter Johnston, Scientist at UCT's Climate Systems Analysis Group
