Disband the gang unit in the Western Cape now - Sapu

The SA Policing Union has approached the courts to get SAPS bosses to put the brakes on the special gang unit in the Western Cape.

They are concerned that there was no consultation with the union as prescribed by the Safety and Security Sectoral Bargaining Council.

The union says they understand the need for the unit and are not against it, but would rather prefer SAPS follow the proper procedures.

General Secretary of SA Police Union, Tumelo Mogodiseng says the unit cannot be allowed to operate without proper procedure being followed, therefore, should be disbanded.

Sapu is a well-controlled union and we cannot allow our members to be part and parcel of a unit that we were not consulted on. We need to know the terms and conditions of that unit.

Tumelo Mogodiseng, General Secretary of SA Police Union

If there is such a thing called the gang unit, it is unlawful and it was not consulted, therefore, it should be disbanded up until proper procedures are followed.

We can't allow our members to operate in anything that is unlawful.

Mogodiseng says the police in the Western Cape should step in and until Sapu is properly consulted.

There are a lot of police that can be deployed there temporarily to deal with the situations of the Western Cape.

Bonteheuwel ward councillor, Angus Mckenzie says it is disgusting that the union is trying to stop something that will finally make a difference in people's lives because of a small technicality that can be easily resolved.

He says the unit has made a huge difference in the communities where people are affected by gangsterism.

I'm really disgusted and I think it is hugely selfish of the union to do this.

Angus Mckenzie, Bonteheuwel ward 50 Councillor

According to Mogodiseng the matter will be heard in court on November 28.
