Table Mountain camp closed to tighten security after spike in robberies

Cape Town's well-known Orange Kloof Tented Camp along Table Mountain has been forced to temporarily close due to increased criminal activity.

The popular hikers' camp spot at Constantia Nek will be shut over the festive season until the end of March 2019 in order to improve security.

All guests who booked accommodation during that period have been notified and refunded.

There have been three incidents in a space of 60 days at the camp spot. The robberies took place at night.

Table Mountain National Park's hospitality services manager, Saskia Marlowe, says guest safety comes first.

They will erect electric fencing and a motorised gate to secure the site before taking any further bookings.

We don't agree that we overreacted.

We've had a number of robberies at the Orange Kloof Tented Camp and people's safety would be our first concern.

It's our responsibility, knowing that we have a problem in the area, to first clean-up the problem before we continue to accept guest bookings.

One of our guests could be injured or possibly lose their lives in an attack and we're not prepared to take that risk.
