Immigrant parents must follow due processes to register children with DHA

If a migrant child is born in South Africa he or she assumes the status of the parents.

The child does not automatically become a citizen of the county according to the law.

Acting Director General at the Department of Home Affairs Thulani Mavuso says after parents have registered their children with the respective embassies; they can go to Home Affairs to apply for a permanent residence for the child.

If a parent of a particular child is a permanent resident in the Republic of South Africa that child must also follow the status of the parents and become a permanent resident.

Thulani Mavuso, Acting Director General at Dept Home Affairs

The parent takes the confirmation of birth which is issued by Home Affairs, they go to their embassy of their country of origin and register the child as a citizen of the country where the parents come from.
