Founder at South African Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse (Samsosa) Rees Mann says a court judgment of 23 years imprisonment handed to Collan Rex - former water polo assistant at Parktown Boys' High, sends a clear message that sexual abuse of minors is unacceptable.
Rex was sentenced on Thursday morning to 20 years imprisonment for sexual assault and a further three years for common assault.
He pleaded guilty to 144 counts of sexual assault and 12 of common assault.
Mann says the sentence is an important part of the healing process for the boys.
I think the sentence is sending quite a clear message that sexual abuse of minors is not acceptable in any form or manner. It also highlights for us, that the boy child can also be a victim. 23 years as a sentence should be norm now, for too long we have seen very small sentences....— Rees Mann, Founder at South African Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse (SAMSOSA)
Today the boys moved from victims to now having to go through a journey of being survivors. The sentence alone is an important thing for them to start the healing process...— Rees Mann, Founder at South African Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse (SAMSOSA)
