Eskom has warned South Africans to prepare for load shedding this week.

Eskom has warned South Africans to prepare for load shedding this week.

The power utility implemented stage two load shedding over the weekend. As coal stocks drop, the power utility says it encountered difficulties over the weekend and the situation has not improved.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe described the situation at Eskom as 'dire'.

Speaking to Keino on CapeTalk's Breakfast Show, he said it has had a lot of breakdowns from its coal-fired stations and facilities that are using water are running low.

Management has put aside about R11.5 million to address this problem. This whole process is going to take time. The projection from the management is that the maintenance is going to take at least twelve months. This does not mean there will be load shedding for twelve months, but during those periods of maintenance, there will be vulnerability on our power.

Khulu Phasiwe - Eskom Spokepeson

Phasiwe said due to the backlog of maintenance, diesel shortage, and the water reservoir being low, it will implement stage two of load-shedding from 9 o'clock on Monday morning. He also urged customers to use electricity sparingly, saying every bit helps.
